Field of Ladies in Yarra Park

Support BCNA with your spot in the virtual Pink Lady

Monday, July 12, 2021

For the first time since 2019, the annual Pink Lady Match in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) will return to the MCG, when Melbourne take on Hawthorn on Saturday July 17 at 4.35pm AEST.

The MCG – along with the Melbourne Football Club, the MCC and their members, supporters and partners – has annually turned ‘pink’ to raise awareness and funds for the BCNA, while helping bring the Field of Women to life, which highlights the thousands of Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

And while the iconic giant pink lady won’t be on show this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, supporters can get involved in securing their virtual place on the ‘G, no matter where you live Australia-wide.

The Pink Lady Match – a staple of Melbourne Football Club home-and-away fixtures since the first match back in Round 7, 2005 – is a special opportunity for people to show their support for everyone in the community who has been affected by breast cancer and the additional challenges they have faced through COVID-19 often facing diagnosis and treatment alone.

This Saturday, outside the MCG in the Yarra Park precinct there will be a Tribute Field of Women, to recognise family or friends that have been diagnosed with breast cancer, or who has passed away from the disease.

Anyone can buy a virtual place, leave a message of support and share their participation image on social media with the hashtags #PinkLadyMatch #StandWithMeAtTheG #BCNAPinkLady

Breast cancer doesn’t just affect the individual diagnosed – it has a ripple effect on partners, children, friends, teammates and colleagues. It is the most common cancer affecting Australian women.

In 2021, it is estimated that 19,998 women and 164 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, this works out to be 55 people every day, and eight Australians will die each day from breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is Australia’s leading breast cancer consumer organisation. BCNA was born out of a small group of determined women who wanted to make the breast cancer journey better.

When Lyn Swinburne founded BCNA in 1998, her vision was for no one to feel alone through their experience of breast cancer. In 2021, that vision remains our priority whilst ensuring these women and men can access the very best support, treatment and care.

All MCG match day staff will be getting in the spirit of the day, donning Pink Lady Sports Day caps and beanies throughout Round 18.

If you can’t be at the 'G to support the Pink Lady game this year, you can still get behind the BCNA and purchase Pink Sports Day merchandise via www.bcna.org.au.
