The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), manager of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), welcomes the opportunity to host over 80,000 members and fans at the Boxing Day Test.
In line with the Victorian Government’s 90 per cent vaccination roadmap and subject to an approved COVIDSafe Plan, crowds could be flocking to the MCG to see Australia take on England at the birth place of Test cricket, the MCG.As the MCG readies itself to host Sheffield Shield, Domestic One Day Cup and Big Bash League matches over the coming months, news of major crowds at the 2021 Boxing Day Test will signify the return of major sporting events in Melbourne.
The MCG last hosted crowds at a sporting event back on July 11, a Round 17 AFL clash between Collingwood and Richmond.
Melbourne Cricket Club Chief Executive Stuart Fox said he was thrilled with Sunday’s announcement and that the MCG would be prepared to host large crowds at the venue for the upcoming Boxing Day Test.
“It will be a pretty special sight to see so many members and fans at the MCG again, in what has the potential to be the largest crowd at an Australian venue since the pandemic began,” Mr Fox said.
“The team is busy preparing the MCG for our reopening and will continue to work closely with Cricket Australia and the Victorian Government in executing our COVIDSafe plan to ensure the ongoing wellbeing of all attending members and fans.
“The MCG has been home to some of Australia’s greatest and most cherished sporting moments for more than 165 years and is a landmark of unity, dreams and celebration and for that reason we can’t wait for the heart of Victoria to beat strong once again.”
The Club is working to finalise a date for when tickets will be available to be purchased by members to the Boxing Day Test, and will announce this in due course.
