2019/20 Highlights from the Reserve: Records break as Stoinis stars

Members were treated to a T20 masterclass by Melbourne Stars’ opener, Marcus Stoinis, as they claimed a dominant win over the Sydney Sixers during 2019/20 Big Bash League (BBL) season.

Stoinis could do no wrong as he hit 21 MCG boundaries to score an unbeaten 147 runs from 79 balls – smashing the previous individual score record of 122 held by Hobart Hurricanes’ D’Arcy Short.

Accompanied by a strong performance of 59 from 40 balls from fellow opener Hilton Cartwright, the pair gelled to achieve the majority of the Stars’ 219 runs, the third highest team total in BBL history.

A daunting run chase for the visitors, the Sixers scored a gallant 175 runs from their 20 overs – an otherwise high score on any other night – however were unable to chase down the number set by the Stars.

This match was one of 10 wins for the Stars in the BBL09 season, including one of their eight-game winning-streak. Although not claiming the trophy at the end of the season, the Stars’ season provided plenty of thrills and excitement.
