MITS students ‘come and try’ cricket at the ‘G

Could we have unearthed our next cricket superstar? While it’s too early to tell, there was no doubting the energy and enthusiasm that filled the MCG Indoor Cricket Nets when the Club hosted students from the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS) for a ‘Come and Try’ session last month.

Based in nearby Richmond on Wurundjeri Country, MITS exists to empower Indigenous students from regional and remote communities to achieve their educational aspirations in Melbourne.

Each year MITS supports 22 Year 7 students who spend the year learning in the MITS classroom, as well as close to 100 MITS alumni who, from Year 8 onwards, have transitioned into partner schools based in Melbourne.

The MCC Foundation has partnered with MITS since December 2021.

In addition to pursuing their education and academic goals, MITS students and alumni are encouraged to explore other interests during their time in Melbourne, with many students drawn to sporting pursuits.

The Club was therefore thrilled to be able to welcome the students to the world-class training facilities at the ‘G and introduce them to the game of cricket.

A group of senior coaches and players from the MCC’s Premier ranks took the eager crew through their paces in a range of skill-based drills designed to give them a taste of the sport.

For many of the students, the session in the nets was their first time holding a bat or bowling a ball but we doubt it will be the last!
