The Committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is pleased to announce the election of Fred Oldfield, the current Vice-President, as our 29th President.
Fred will succeed current President Michael Happell when his four-year term ends in March 2023.Having served on the MCC Committee since 2012, Fred was elected Vice-President in 2017. He is the Chair of the Ground Sub-committee and a member of both the Executive and Finance Sub-committees. Fred is also the Committee representative for the Bowls Sporting Section.
Fred is a non-executive director of Westbourne Capital and has significant expertise in the areas of infrastructure investment, capital markets, funds management and law. He was previously the manager of strategic development and stakeholder relations at toll road operator Transurban and had a 16-year career at UBS in equity capital markets including being head of the Australian securities business in London.
He holds Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics degrees from Monash University.
Fred has been an MCC member since 1982 and expressed his great pride in being appointed the next President.
“The Melbourne Cricket Club has played a significant role in my life as well as my family’s and I am truly honoured to be given the opportunity to lead our great club on behalf of all members,” Fred said.
“I look forward to serving the members of our club and the many visitors we have across the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Australian Sports Museum to further enhance our shared love of sport.
“I pay tribute to our outgoing President Michael Happell who has led the Club through the most challenging period in its 184 year history due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been a steady force to ensure our longevity and recovery and his overall contribution to the Club across his 12 years on the Committee is greatly appreciated by all members.”
Michael Happell will officially hand over the presidency to Fred at the Club’s March 2023 Committee meeting.
Michael congratulated Fred on being elected as his successor.
“On behalf of the Committee and all of our members, I congratulate Fred on his election as the next President of the Melbourne Cricket Club,” Michael said.
“Fred deeply treasures his membership of our club and I know he will be a dedicated President for all members.
“After many years of service to the Club through his various roles on Sub-committees coupled with his astute business expertise, he is well placed to steer our club through the post COVID-19 era.”
The Committee will announce further changes to its make up in early 2023 following Michael’s retirement and Fred’s elevation to President.
