Vale Bob Cowper OAM

The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is saddened by the passing of former Australian and Victorian cricketer Bob Cowper OAM – an Honorary Cricket Member who had a significant and lasting impact on the Club.

Representing Victoria from 1959 – 1960, the left-handed batsman went on to play for Australia between 1964 and 1968, with five centuries to his name including a famous innings in 1966 against England. After batting for more than twelve hours he made a remarkable 307 – the highest individual Test innings by an Australian player at the MCG.

This record is displayed within the MCC Members’ Reserve and remains a cherished piece of MCG sporting history.

Cowper’s legacy is captured in the MCG’s iconic tapestry image, also located within the Members’ Reserve and a highlight on the MCG Tour route.

He finished his career with a total of 2,061 runs and 36 wickets across 27 Tests.

Cowper’s sporting achievements were recognised when he was awarded Honorary Cricket Membership in 2005 elected by the MCC Committee. A special recognition for prominent cricketers who have competed and excelled at international level.

Cowper’s legacy extends beyond his cricket representation having been formally recognised as a Life Member of the MCC Real Tennis section for his invaluable contribution to the Club, sport and community.

Melbourne Cricket Club President Fred Oldfield said Cowper has left an incredible legacy with both the MCC and cricket fans universally.

“Bob was an incredibly talented cricketer – an elegant batsman whose legacy is still talked about in the modern era,” Mr Oldfield said.

“That famous innings in 1966 is highlighted on the MCG Tour route every day, with visitors from all over the world marvelling at such an incredible feat.

“His recognition as a life member of the MCC Real Tennis sporting section shows his immense dedication to sporting life, honouring the foundation of the Club and its values.

“On behalf of the Club and Real Tennis sporting community, we extend our sincere condolences to Bob’s family and loved ones.”
