The case of the borrowed jumper

From the Members Tuesday OCT 18

Bob Utber

Bob Utber has inadvertently finished up with a fellow MCC member’s Geelong jumper. He’s feeling very guilty about this. He wants to find this helpful member so he can return his jumper.

Here’s Bob’s appeal which he hopes will trigger a response…

As a six year old George Washington (1732-1799) is purported to have said, “I cannot tell a lie” when he chopped down his father’s cherry tree.

I find myself in a similar predicament that happened at the recent AFL Grand Final at the `G.

On the Friday before the big event I met a group of members who had camped overnight and were preparing for another night out before the big game.

There is something unique about our great game and the camaraderie that develops as part of the “camp-out” before the game. Those of us who are old enough can remember camping out for days at Carlton, Geelong or anywhere for days, just to get those beloved seats for the big day.

We might have been foes on the day but pre-match we all camped out for the love of the game and became bosom-buddies.

My predicament commenced on AFL Grand Final Saturday just before the game, when I found myself feeling a tad cold from the prevailing winds.

I decided to go downstairs and purchase a Geelong scarf but on my way, I met one of those die-hard-late-nighters and told him of my predicament.

“Don’t do that, I can lend you a jumper. Just wait here,” he said. I waited, admiring the work of my fellow Geelong fan, artist Danny Moynihan, on the wall.

My new best friend returned with the jumper, which looked splendid in the colour of the Pivots and similar in design to a Gondoliers shirt. It kept me warm for the remainder of the match.

Come the final siren, I was standing in the Geelong race waiting to embrace the players, when it dawned on me. In my euphoria, I had forgotten about my good Samaritan Geelong and MCC member who had loaned me his jumper.

“S--- what do I do?” I said to myself. I did not know his name, but I do have a mental picture of him. But how do I find him?

I was in touch with the MCC on the Monday after the game, spoke to ABC sporstcaster Catherine Murphy who was interviewing me on the Friday and sent out an SOS on my Saturday morning radio gig. All to no avail.

Now, here I am back at Balcony Banter and The Footy Almanac, in a last ditch stand to find this wonderful Samaritan.

Help please.

I cannot tell a lie but, basically I am a thief in Cats clothing.
