On this day in 1838, five men - Frederick Powlett, Robert Russell, George B. Smyth and brothers Alfred and Charles Mundy – decided to form a cricket club.
182 years later, that club is one of the biggest and oldest in Australia - the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC). One of the Club’s biggest accomplishments – the establishment of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in September 1853.As ground manager of the MCG, the MCC is ingrained in Australian and global sporting history.
From creating the first set of rules for Victorian Football (later Australian Football) to hosting the first cricket Test match in 1877, the MCC is synonymous with Australian sport.
Since its creation, the MCC has grown to include 13 sporting sections with over 3000 participants and over 130,000 members.
2020 has been a challenging year for the MCC – with the COVID-19 pandemic meaning members couldn’t come together for Club events, community sports or at the MCG.
But with the Boxing Day Test announced to be held at the MCG in December, and local sport returning across the state, the Club is looking forward to celebrating with its members again soon.
To mark the milestone the MCC today launched its Instagram channel, @mcc_members, which will feature historic photos from the Members’ Reserve and the MCC.
