Vale Mark Smith


The Melbourne Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the passing of former Committee member Mark Smith.

Mark joined the Committee in 2011 before retiring in March of this year. In his time on the Committee, he was a valued member of the Finance & Audit and Ground Sub-committees and was the Committee representative for the Club’s Tennis Section.

MCC President Michael Happell said Mark, a passionate Tigers supporter, brought a wealth of business acumen to the Club.

“Mark made a tremendous contribution to the Club and the MCG through his Committee role and played an integral part in major contracts and negotiations given his incredible business experience with Cadbury Schweppes, Patties, GUD Holdings and API,” Mr Happell said.

“We valued his great sense of humour and supportive nature as we took on our roles overseeing the MCC and the MCG.

“We’re so grateful for Mark’s time on the Committee and send our deepest condolences to his wife Anne and sons Sam and Dan,” he said.

In his professional career, Mark had served as Chairman of GUD Holdings Limited and Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Australian Pharmaceutical Industries Limited. He was a former Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Patties Foods Limited, a former Non-Executive Director of Toll Holdings Limited and a former Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Food Holdings Limited. During his 16 years with Cadbury Schweppes, he held several positions across Australia, the UK and North America including Managing Director of Cadbury Confectionary Australia and New Zealand, Managing Director of Cadbury Schweppes ANZ, and was a member of the Cadbury Schweppes Asia Pacific Regional Board. Prior to joining Cadbury Schweppes, Mark held senior management roles with Unilever and Uncle Tobys.

Mark also had a strong commitment to not-for-profit organisations as Chair of Enactus Australia Limited and Chair of the Humour Foundation Limited.
