Ian Johnson was an Australian Test bowler who represented Australia during the 1940s and 1950s.Making his debut against New Zealand in 1946, Johnson’s 10 years playing for Australia saw him take 109 wickets at an average of 29.19. A handy lower order batter, Johnson also scored 1,000 runs during his 45 matches, including six fifties.
He was also a member of Don Bradman’s Invincibles team, who went through the 1948 tour of England undefeated.
Johnson captained Australia for 17 matches, with a record of seven wins, five losses and five draws.
Following his retirement from cricket, Johnson worked as a sport commentator, covering events such as the 1956 Summer Olympics, and was appointed secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Club – a role which he would hold for 26 years.
