The Melbourne Cricket Club is saddened by the passing of SACA CEO Keith Bradshaw and MCC 50-year member and former Victorian Governor Sir James Gobbo this week and extends its sympathies to their families and loved ones.
Mr Bradshaw, a Temporary member of the Melbourne Cricket Club through his role at South Australia Cricket Association, passed away at age 58 following a long battle with cancer.Born in Tasmania, Mr Bradshaw began his career in cricket on the pitch where he played 25 first-class matches and made nine appearances for his state between 1984 and 1988.
The much-respected cricket administrator enjoyed a strong relationship with the Melbourne Cricket Club through various roles throughout his career including in his time as Chief Executive Officer of Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord’s from 2006 to 2011. He was appointed to the role of SACA CEO in 2011 and is remembered as an innovative leader in the cricket community.
Sir James Gobbo, who passed away aged 90, was a MCC member of over 50 years and frequently attended the MCG amongst his duties in service to the state as Governor of Victoria, Lieutenant Governor of Victoria and as a Victorian Supreme Court Judge.
Born in Carlton in 1931 to Italian parents, Sir James settled in Carlton after a childhood spent in Italy and it was there his passion for the Carlton Football Club grew.
Throughout his career Sir James frequently engaged with the Carlton Football Club, often addressing players as a guest speaker and supporting Club events.
A state funeral for Sir James will be held on November 16 at St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Melbourne Cricket Club President Michael Happell expressed his sadness on behalf of all members for the loss of two of their own.
“This week has been one of sorrow in losing two of our esteemed members within the space of a few days,” said Mr Happell.
“Both Keith and Sir James were extremely well respected and contributed greatly to the improvement of their communities in Adelaide and Melbourne respectively.
“Their efforts in working for the betterment of those around them has left a lasting impact.
“The Melbourne Cricket Club has always enjoyed an close relationship with the Marylebone Cricket Club and through his tenure as CEO, I came to know Keith extremely well. He will be greatly missed.
“I send my deepest condolences to the families of Keith and Sir James.”
