Listen: MCG Legend Leigh Matthews – the playing years

There are few players and coaches across VFL and AFL history who know the triumphant highs and devastating lows of football in September as intimately as Leigh Matthews.

Across two new episodes of the MCC members’ podcast, At the ‘G, host Anthony Hudson delves into the unparalleled playing and coaching career of the man known as Lethal Leigh.

In part one of Anthony Hudson’s chat with Matthews, the pair explore Leigh’s playing days and his journey from a young boy watching football in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs to one of the game’s most revered players across the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Leigh details the highlights of a playing career from 1969 to 1985 that saw him play 332 games, kick 915 goals for Hawthorn, win four premierships and an incredible eight best and fairest awards, in addition to the differences in life off the field in his day compared to players of the modern game.

Anthony Hudson is also joined by Leigh’s former teammate and coach, David Parkin, who shares his memories of Leigh’s uncompromising style and a single mindedness that took him to the heights of the league.

Leigh’s candid insights into coaching are coming up in part two, to be released next week.
