MCC members to don green and gold at Commonwealth Games

The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) would like to wish good luck to our ten members who will represent Australia at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, beginning on Thursday July 28.

From swimming to athletics, cycling and cricket, MCC members will be in action across the entire 12 days of action.

Backing-up from their Olympics campaign in 2021, swimmers Jenna Strauch, Matthew Temple and Mack Horton return in the Breastroke, Butterfly and Freestyle events respectively.

Also taking to the pool is Jacob Templeton, who will compete in the 50m Freestyle S13 event on day two of competition and Samuel Williamson, who will represent Australia in Breastroke.

Three members will compete in the athletics portion of the Games.

Abbey Caldwell (1500m) comes into the Games in dominating form as Australia’s 2022 Nationals title holder and recording a personal best time of 4:04.18 in May this year.

Declan Tingay returns from his Olympic debut last year, where he finished 17th in the 20km Race Walk. In Birmingham, Tingay will compete in the 10km Race Walk event.

Also in the athletics division is Christopher Mitrevski, who will represent Australia in the Men’s Long Jump for his second Commonwealth Games. Making his Games debut on the Gold Coast in 2018, Mitrevski finished sixth with a jump of 7.90m.

In the veldrome, Caitlin Ward will act as pilot for Jessica Gallagher in the Para-Cycling Sprint and Time Trial events.

Annabel Sutherland will be part of history as cricket makes its Commonwealth Games debut – with the T20 Women’s Cricket event the first time the sport has been included in the Games. Included in Group A along with India, Barbados and Pakistan, Australia will be in action on day one, day three and day six in the group stages, before the semi-finals begin on Saturday August 6.

The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games will kick off at 5.00am AEST on Friday July 29 with the Opening Ceremony, with majority of events occurring between 7.00pm and 7.00am AEST. The Games will be broadcast live on Channel 7 and 7Mate, as well as the 7 Plus app.
