There’s a new name in the stands at the MCG, with the Great Southern Stand officially renamed as the Shane Warne Stand.
The new name was unveiled by Shane Warne’s children – Brooke, Jackson and Summer – during the State Memorial Service last night at the MCG.
The stand honours the cricket legend, who passed away suddenly earlier this month.
Built in 1991-92 along the southern boundary of the MCG – giving it the original name of the Great Southern Stand – the stand occupies almost half of the MCG.
Melbourne Cricket Club, ground managers of the MCG, President Michael Happell said the Club is honoured to be able to acknowledge his impact on Australian sport.
“We are grateful to be able to acknowledge the legacy of Shane Warne and his contribution to cricket by renaming an MCG stand in his honour.”
