Sleepers brave the cold for a cause

The Melbourne Cricket Club was thrilled to once again host Melbourne City Mission’s flagship fundraising event, Sleep at the ‘G last night, raising much needed funds for vulnerable young people in Victoria who don’t have a safe place to call home.

More than 800 people braved the wintry Melbourne night and set-up sleeping bags on cardboard boxes in the corridors of the MCG. Friends, family and colleagues, first-time sleepers and frequent campaigners all united to raise funds and awareness for a serious issue – homelessness among Victoria’s youth.

This was the first time the event was hosted at its namesake venue since 2019, with the last three years held virtually or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants moved between activities throughout the night, hearing from those who have experienced youth homelessness first hand, before the lights went out and sleepers bunkered down on the hard, cold concrete floors below the stadium seats.

The Melbourne Cricket Club is proud of its 24 staff members who braved the cold and slept at the ‘G last night – with staff members raising a combined total of $23,586.
