One-Day Clean Sweep for Women’s Premier Cricket Teams

It was a hat-trick of victories for our Women’s Victorian Premier Cricket teams after another successful year on the field which saw all three Premier Cricket Teams, as well as the Women’s Under 18 side, claim premierships for the 2023/24 season.

All three senior Women’s Premier Cricket teams claimed premierships in the One-Day format, repeating the feats of the 2021/22 season in sweeping the competition, while the Club Championship was also secured for a remarkable fourth consecutive season.

It was a double dee-light for the MCC on the first weekend of Women’s Premier Cricket Grand finals, with both the Second XI and Third XI in action at Beaumaris Secondary College, with both sides claiming flags on their home turf against Geelong and Carlton, respectively.

The Second XI began their match with some early breakthroughs with the ball, thanks to opening pair Jordan Watson and Darcy Collins. With the bat, it was Kamya Mishra who dominated to lead the team to victory, with a match-winning 90* from 97 balls, earning her Player of the Match honours.

In the Third XI match, it was a well-rounded display from all MCC bowlers to keep Carlton’s run-rate in check across the 40 overs. Chasing a total of 188, it was a stellar performance from 15 year-old Shenali Fernando, who scored 86* from 99 balls and steered the Club to its second premiership of the day.

The following week in sweltering heat, the First XI produced a dominant performance to defeat Prahran by 163 runs at Shepley Oval in Dandenong.

With three players registering half-centuries – openers Rhiann O’Donnell (73) and Ella Hayward (57), and Amy Yates (50) – and Zoe Samuel finishing with 46* off 28 balls, the Demons were in a strong position heading in to the second innings.

With the ball, Ella Hayward starred with 5-26 off 10 overs. Her efforts with both bat and ball saw the all-rounder awarded the Betty Wilson Medal as the best player on the ground. At just 20 years of age, Hayward is now a triple First XI premiership player.

To cap off a remarkable season, the Women’s Premier Under 18 team defeated Carlton by seven wickets to win their third premiership in as many years, and make it a yet another season to remember for our Women’s teams.
