The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) mourns the passing of former President and Honorary Life Member, David Jones AO OBE KStJ.
David led the Club from 2003 to 2007 and governed during a period of great transformation and celebration for the Club and Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The MCG’s 150th anniversary celebration, marked by the unveiling of a tapestry work displaying the rich history of the Ground that now holds pride of place outside the Long Room, was the first of several milestones noted during his time as President.
He served as much of the construction of the northern stand redevelopment project took place in which the Ponsford, Olympic and Members’ Reserve stands were rebuilt to enhance the amenities on offer for members and public patrons alike.
In the Club’s 2005-06 Annual Report, David wrote: “I’ve always considered it a privilege to serve this great club of ours and never more so than over the past year when we have seen our hopes and dreams realised as redevelopment work completely transformed the MCG into what we believe is the finest sporting stadium in the world.”
Construction works concluded ahead of the 2006 Commonwealth Games where, as President, David saw the benefits of the redevelopment come to life when the MCG hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletic events.
History and heritage were a particular focus of David’s. He was instrumental in securing sponsorship from Tattersall’s – a link to his role as former Executive Chairman of the company – for the acquisition of sporting memorabilia including John Famechon’s ring belt and Olympic rower Peter Antonie’s comprehensive collection.
Perhaps most notably, his passion for our sporting history survives in the Tattersall’s Parade of Champions project that sees 10 statues of our sporting superheroes from a range of disciplines surround the MCG.
Often described as a popular leader of the Club and revered for his personable demeanour, David was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Club in 2008 following the conclusion of his tenure as President and 19 years on the Committee. Supported through it all by his beloved wife, the late Diana Jones AM.
“David’s profound legacy is felt both in physical aspects of the ground and in the way the Club operates today,” said MCC President Fred Oldfield.
“He championed inclusivity and was delighted to play a role in the appointment of the MCC’s first woman committee member, Jane Nathan, while fostering a fantastic culture within the Club.
“Functions were a particular favourite of his, with David being a driving force behind celebrations including the 21st anniversary of the admission of women members and the introduction of New Member Induction functions to welcome new members to the Club.
“His passion for people, sport and all aspects of Club life was infectious. He will be greatly missed.
“On behalf of the Club and MCC Committee, I extend our greatest sympathies to David’s children Richard, Vicki and Peter, David’s extended family and those close to him.”
