MCC Library celebrates 150th anniversary

Today, the Melbourne Cricket Club Library celebrates a momentous achievement – 150 years since its foundation in 1873.

The MCC Library collection is among the best and most comprehensive sport-related collections in the world. With items from the 1600s to today, the Library is a major repository for information on sport, and is used widely by members, researchers, media and sport-enthusiasts.

The MCC’s heritage collections were founded on September 6, 1873 with the donation of 13 volumes of the Australasian newspaper – the beginning of the MCC Library.

Since then, the collection has grown to over one million items, with 119 different sports represented across the books, periodicals, newspapers, programmes, ephemera, microfilms, e-publications, videotapes, DVDs and CD-roms.

You can read more about the origins of the MCC Library on pages 4-13 of the latest issue of The Yorker.

To celebrate the Library’s 150th birthday, our MCC Librarians have selected 150 treasures of the collection to highlight over the next 12 months.

The list will be published here and updated as the 150th year of the Library progresses.

The MCC Library is located on Level 3 of the MCC Members’ Reserve. It is open to members between 10.00am and 4.00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and also on match days. The general public can visit by appointment.
